Nord-est de l’Ontario : quelque 450 postes de paramédics pourraient être à pourvoir d’ici trois ans
SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. — Le nord-est de l’Ontario pourrait devoir recruter quelque 450 paramédics au cours des trois prochaines années, selon la cheffe des services paramédics de Sault Ste. Marie.
Dans un reportage publié cette semaine par SooToday, la cheffe Kate Kirkham estime qu’environ 450 postes de paramédics seront à pourvoir dans la région au cours des trois prochaines années.
À Sault Ste. Marie seulement, le service cherche actuellement à embaucher environ 15 paramédics à temps partiel afin de compléter ses effectifs.
Kirkham s’attend également à d’autres besoins d’embauche au cours des prochaines années, notamment en raison des départs à la retraite et de la croissance des programmes.
Le service lui-même a considérablement grandi.
Kirkham a indiqué à SooToday qu’il comptait environ 36 paramédics à temps plein lorsqu’elle a commencé sa carrière. Il en compte aujourd’hui environ 70.
Le travail a lui aussi changé.
Selon Kirkham, les paramédics travaillaient alors avec six médicaments et un défibrillateur. Ils peuvent maintenant administrer plus de 30 médicaments sous la supervision du médecin qui encadre leur pratique, alors que les soins préhospitaliers deviennent de plus en plus complexes.
La région tente parallèlement de développer sa propre relève.
Le nouveau programme de techniques paramédicales du Sault College accueille actuellement 20 étudiants. Le collège vise une cohorte de 40 étudiants à l’automne 2027.
Kirkham a indiqué que le service paramédic de Sault Ste. Marie prévoit accueillir plusieurs de ces étudiants pour leurs stages cliniques.
Le chiffre de quelque 450 postes soulève toutefois une question plus large : le nord-est de l’Ontario pourra-t-il former et retenir suffisamment de nouveaux paramédics pour répondre aux besoins anticipés?

Northeastern Ontario could need roughly 450 paramedics within three years
SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. — Northeastern Ontario could need to recruit roughly 450 paramedics over the next three years, according to Sault Ste. Marie’s chief of paramedic services.
In a report published this week by SooToday, Chief Kate Kirkham estimated that approximately 450 paramedic vacancies are expected across the region during the next three years.
In Sault Ste. Marie alone, the service is currently trying to hire approximately 15 part-time paramedics to bring its roster up to full strength.
Kirkham also expects additional hiring needs over the coming years as paramedics retire and programs continue to grow.
The service itself has expanded substantially.
Kirkham told SooToday that Sault Ste. Marie had approximately 36 full-time paramedics when she started. It now has about 70.
The job has changed as well.
According to Kirkham, paramedics worked with six medications and a defibrillator when she began. They can now administer more than 30 medications under the physician overseeing their practice as prehospital care becomes increasingly complex.
The region is also attempting to build its own workforce pipeline.
Sault College's new paramedic program currently has 20 students. The college is targeting an intake of 40 students in fall 2027.
Kirkham said Sault Ste. Marie Paramedic Services expects to take many of those students for their clinical placements.
But the estimate of roughly 450 vacancies raises a much larger question: Can northeastern Ontario train and retain enough new paramedics to meet the anticipated demand?
